Niche cars aren’t going to happen any time soon with all those bills coming.

I hate to burst your bubble but that seems very unlikely to ever happen, just like my need for a Crosstrek STI.

Seems reasonable to me.

You basically want a TTRS.

...

...

I do, don’t I?

But rather strangely I find the Scirocco a better-looking car.

Guess I just have to gut the TT RS and find out how to put it in the Scirocco.

They all share the same platform. Just find a Scirocco without an engine and buy the awd system and five cylinder engine from the TTRS and somehow magically mend it all together and bam, you got what you wanted. Alternatively, get an Audi RS3.

You can already get one! Just, not from VW. And it’s kiiiinda mostly not legal in the US. And it’s going to cost you.

Kinja'd!!!

HPA makes (made?) a few different models:

300hp 3.6L Naturally Aspirated VR6 with FWD DSG - priced at $85,000+

475hp Single turbo 3.6L VR6 with 4-Motion AWD DSG - priced at $110,000+

640hp Twin turbo 3.6L VR6 with 4-Motion AWD DSG - priced at $150,000+

Of course, all of this info is from 2010. Who knows if they could even make it happen anymore, and if they did - whether you could get it across the border from Canada. Anything is possible if you’ve got a checkbook!

Wait, what? How did HPA get a Scirocco in Canada? They’re not sold here either.

If you have to ask, you probably don’t want to know the answer.

I have to guess part of the cost is a whole GTI just so they can use the VIN tags, but that’s nowhere near legal, either. I have to imagine it’s one of those “hope nobody looks into it too much” situations.

Anyway, this article says “The volks at HPA Motorsports have worked out a deal to have the Scirocco imported directly to its workshop in British Columbia.” Of course, getting the car here is the easy part. It’s the title and registration where you run into problems.

I found this that explains that they’re imported as rolling chassis’ from Germany with no powertrain. So then they’re registered as kit cars under the HPA brand, which is a thing you can do in Canada. Similar idea to RUF and Porsche, just different countries.

VW should really have released this in the US instead of focusing on diesel...

maybe they wouldn’t be in such a tough spot right now.

Hm, I do remember hearing that. I think that’s the same as how they used to sell the Ariel Atom in the US - only it had to be a kit car “assembled by” and registered to a private owner.

If VW made a low-frills RWD coupe like that, for the US market, I probably never would have discovered the S2000. Just because I come from VW blood. No regrets though; I got to know a lot more cars a lot better once I got past VW fandom.

I have lower expectations. Like the whole bringing it to America part.
